Create your own set of apps… and stick to it

I posted the following at the Camino forums. It started out simple but I needed to put in other bits of info. It’s a reply to those who wish Camino to have RSS support.
While writing the reply, I realized that I already have my best set of productivity apps. I’ve tried others (and have wasted time trying to figure them out). I find myself going back to my Camino, NewsFire, and ecto combo.
Here’s my post…
I do not want RSS, email, blogging, or even extensions to be integrated with Camino. I use Camino as it is, a browser.
For RSS, I use NewsFire because I feel it’s the most simple yet elegant RSS reader for OS X. (I have tried Pulp Fiction, Shrook 2, and NetNewsWire but I find all three to be slow, confusing, and cluttered. Plus I don’t feel like I’m using an OS X app when I use those three. Weird, I know.) I have also tried Sage, Flock, and Safari’s ways of dealing with RSS… I find them all too cluttered too.
To understand my point of view, here’s my usual routine: I set NewsFire to update every hour. I then scan the headlines and if there’s good material, I click on it for Camino to provide an expanded view. If I like the news, I go back to NewsFire and pass it to my blog editor, ecto. (still further, NewsFire can also be linked to cocoalicious…)
As for finding RSS feeds, I do it the old-fashioned way. I go to a site I like, press / and search for “rss” … If I find a link, I click and let NewsFire handle it.
Forgot to say extensions… they might be cool in Firefox but my needs are simple. The Dashboard widgets usually provides my extra needs.
There are also ways to read RSS online: Google Reader, Bloglines, and Yahoo to name a few. Plus there are the new ones like Digg and Newsvine — where you let others do the news updating for you.
