Here’s a tip to speed up Mail. My Envelop index went down from 21.9MB to 19.2MB and really speeded up everything in Mail. The Terminal will be used in this process so expect to do some careful typing.

it is possible to get quite a speed boost out of Mail.app by stripping all the bloat out of its Envelope index, an SQLite database Mail uses to store senders, recipients, subjects and so on. Hawk Wings
