FTP Files Without a Third-Party Program

Ftp Files

UPDATE: THIS DOES NOT work. As posted by “A nony mouse” in the comments, FTP via the Finder is read-only. There’s also a lively discussion over at Apple Support regarding this Apple Pro “tip.”

I’ve been using Cyberduck and Yummy FTP. It’s good to know this tip for quick FTP’ing.

Need to email somebody a file that’s larger than his 5MB email limit? Use FTP, because you can upload huge files with no restriction. You probably already knew that, but did you know that you don’t have to buy a third-party FTP client to FTP your files? That’s right baby, you can do it right from within Tiger. Apple - Pro - Tips

You know what? It is better to use MacFUSE with MacFUSION for a more secure transfer AND you don’t need to open the often not secure ftp port.

Uhm…. FTP in the Finder is *read only* so you can’t use it to Upload (send) files. You can only use it to download files from a server. Useless for the purpose you’re stating, then … a 3rd party FTP app is still required.

Thanks A nony mouse. I assumed it works because after all, it’s an Apple Pro Tip. I’ll investigate further and repost if I find out something.

Well, you only need the third-party app if you want a shiny GUI (Finder integration-like).

The “ftp” that comes with OSX in the Console can write just fine, and for occasional use, it’s not even worth installing a GUI ftp frontend, I think.

Rom: Well, sure, if both ends support sftp/ssh. But if you have to connect to actual plain ftp, which is unfortunately sometimes the case, that ain’t gonna help.

And of course there’s having to install MacFUSE and all that…
