Phone/touch-Kindle Smackdown

Each of these devices have strengths and weaknesses. It also really depends on the needs of the user. If you really can’t decide what to get, then why not get all three?

eMedia. Everyone wants it. And Amazon’s Kindle is the latest media darling. For all that, we think that the iPhone and iPod touch may be getting overlooked. These devices offer a full-color screen with 480-pixel wide displays in landscape mode, PDF compatibility without fees, and full access to the Internet. Sure, you have to jailbreak your system or stick with Safari, but feature-to-feature we think Apple’s hardware stands up pretty well. What do you think? TUAW

This was a pretty absurd comparison on TUAW’s part… I lost a lot of respect for the blog. These are completely different devices for completely different uses. The comparison was extremely biased (it didn’t even mention battery life or the contrast qualities of e-ink compared to a backlit LCD). And seriously, when you list 6″ versus 3.5″ for reading novels, that’s the end of the story.

The iPhone and Touch are nice, but just because another product with a screen exists, some people feel like it’s some sort of threat. Your decision to buy a phone/media player is not invalidated by the existence of an e-book reader… It just seems like these people have some serious insecurities about themselves if they feel like they have to prove how something they bought is better than everything else that comes out, even when there’s no real comparison.

They attempted to hit three birds with one stone. To their detriment. ;)
