1440 x 900 Xandros Linux Easy Mode on a 22″ Acer LCD

Behind everything is a Dtech (Gadmei) TV tuner. This gadget lets me watch cable with the LCD monitor. It also handles the standard DVD player (above). So basically, the Eee PC is not directly attached to the monitor but passes through the Dtech device. (I have yet to figure out how to do picture-in-picture). A pair of Altec Lansing speakers are also connected to teh Dtech device (otherwise, I get a transistor-radio-like sound from the device).

Finally, there’s a standard Logitech keyboard and an MX1000 mouse connected to the Eee PC.

Macworld 2008 rumor report card: some hits, mostly misses

Great list from Engadget. This year, I had much for fun waking up to apple.com. I’ll probably do it again next year… that is if I’m not at Macworld!

5 Things I Missed on my Mac

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I had a three day weekend without a Mac. Though I was able to keep up with news and email with Gmail and Reader, here are some things I missed about my Mac.

1. eye candy - right after I booted up to OS X, I was greeted with the OS X desktop wallpaper, dock, and icons. They all look so simple and well designed. I’ve seen Vista, but there’s something different about the whole effect. It feels cluttered.

2. Quicksilver - there were various times I pressed my Quicksilver shortcut keys on my PC. I missed Quicksilver so much that I almost installed Colibri.

3. Twitterrific - I tried out several Windows Twitter clients but none were up to par.

4. ecto - that’s why I didn’t have any blog entries. ecto has always been the easiest blogging solution. The only way I could have blogged was through Wordpress.

5. Spotlight - I’ve stopped filing documents and apps into descriptive folders. They’re all just in one folder but Spotlight lets me search for those fast. My PC has so many files that it was a chore to search through them — but it was fun discovering many files that I thought were lost.

9 amazing laser-etched laptops you haven’t seen before

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

In the comments area of DVICE, CH00F’s Tron should have been included here! It’s awesome, and, like “Interesting Design” and “Adam &Eve,” the logo fits right in.

Two years ago laser-etched laptops were all over the Internet, mainly because of the famous tarsier and Magritte Powerbooks. But since then people have been busily etching all kinds of things into their laptop lids, from the Mona Lisa to Barry Manilow to My Pretty Pony. In fact, we found nine pieces of etched art (”art” being a relative term) you probably haven’t seen before. Most of them are from Etchstar, with an absolutely gorgeous example from Engrave Your Tech. Enjoy:

Singapore retailers pull iPhone after Apple threats

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Apple would have a field day here in the Philippines… where unlocked iPhones sell for as much as $650. The problem is there really is no Apple presence here except for authorized resellers. That makes it easy for illegal retailers to thrive.

Apple has been cracking down on retailers selling illegally unlocked iPhones – the company’s Danish branch last week threatened wireless retailer Telekæden about the same issue – and is currently targeting wireless distributors in Singapore. After sending emails that implied legal action would be taken against shops that did not comply, retailers began pulling the units from shelves. Reuters reports that Apple would charge the stores approximately $700 USD per unit sold illegally. MacNN

Phone/touch-Kindle Smackdown

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Each of these devices have strengths and weaknesses. It also really depends on the needs of the user. If you really can’t decide what to get, then why not get all three?

eMedia. Everyone wants it. And Amazon’s Kindle is the latest media darling. For all that, we think that the iPhone and iPod touch may be getting overlooked. These devices offer a full-color screen with 480-pixel wide displays in landscape mode, PDF compatibility without fees, and full access to the Internet. Sure, you have to jailbreak your system or stick with Safari, but feature-to-feature we think Apple’s hardware stands up pretty well. What do you think? TUAW
